Drugs & Alcohol

Using drugs and alcohol is a common problem in Scotland. Some people drink alcohol or take drugs because they want to fit in, they might be curious about how they will feel while under the influence, and they might feel pressure to do it or do it so they can hide away from problems or even be a bit more confident in themselves.

Using drugs can impact your mental health and well-being and lead to long-term mental health problems. They often skew our moods and behaviour and make us act and think differently. The effects of alcohol and drugs can sometimes initially feel pleasant, which is why some people continue to misuse them. Some people can use drugs and alcohol to help them cope with difficulties they are already experiencing. If you or someone you know is using them in this way, this may be an addiction. There are many ways you can get support for addiction and some of the resources below should be able to help.

There are laws around drugs and alcohol; and drinking alcohol or taking drugs can have a negative effect on your mental and physical health, so it’s important to know the facts and be aware of the risks.  There are lots of risks from taking drugs and drinking alcohol.  As alcohol and drug use has increased in Scotland in the last few years, there has also been an increase in more drug related deaths (Scottish Government, 2021).  It is therefore really important to reach out and accept support if you need this.
